Pain in the eye following injury.

Resolved Question:

Hi: my wife needs to see an ophthalmologist - she poked her eye about 12 hours ago and her pain is progressively increasing. Her other symptoms are redness, teary eyes and very mild (if any) swelling

Her eye is now also light sensitive.

Is it easier to speak on the phone or how else should we further describe her symptoms to you?

Hello,

Thank you for choosing DoctorSpring.

This can be a epithelial defect , you need to start putting an antibiotic (moxifloxacin) 6 times & a lubricating eye drop (CARBOXY METHYL CELLULOSE ) eye drop 1 hourly. This has to be done in consult with your Doctor. I strongly recommend visiting your Doctor,

Meanwhile I might be able to give a more solid opinion if you can send me a photograph as a followup.

Thank you
Dr Manish Malhotra

Hi Dr. Malhotra: its a little difficult to take a picture of her eye because of the light sensitivity. Currently it is 3:00 am and the question is should we wait until the morning or go the ER to get the antibiotic? Also I'm assuming you aren't able to prescribe an antibiotic over the internet.

Yes, you can wait until the morning. The healing process has to happen naturally. The purpose of antibiotic is to prevent any possible secondary injury. This can wait few hours, no issue there. Unless the symptoms worsens much you can wait to go to ER. Meanwhile take care NOT to rub the eyes. DO NOT put any drops. If your wife is going to sleep make sure she is not unknowingly rubbing her eyes.

I will keep this consult open. You can get back to me anytime.
Sorry, I wont' be able to prescribe online.

Edit # -

If you have easy access to ER you can go now as well. As I have not seen the eye it is bit difficult for me to comment.

Hope this helps

Patient replied :

Ok.. Thank you for your comments. Also, aside from an antibiotic, is there something over the counter for the pain that I can give her. She has taken to Aleve already.

Here are the pictures.. Thanks again for the help

Patient replied :

Aleve should give some relief. Patching the eye can give good relief, but I will not recommend that before seeing your Doctor. There are other drops like NSAID drops, cycloplegic which can be used to ease pain, but before that the eye need to be examined. So if the pain is persistent you should consider visiting ER without delay. Thank you

Hello,

It does look like Corneal Injury abrasion. If possible get to ER . If there is couple of dealy make sure she is not rubbing eyes. Most of these injuries heal without any complications and health quickly.

Thank you
