Will UTI cause frequent urination and irregular menstruation?

Resolved Question:

Is it possible if I have UTI and bleed as if I am having a light period (blood clots)? I started to have the urge to urinate frequently (avg. every half an hour), and it gives me this weird feeling every time I finished urinating. When I wiped it off, there was a light pink blood on the tissue. However, my urine was not cloudy nor had any odor. Up until now I have a mild stomach-cramp like feeling. This morning when I woke up, it was like I was having my period, since I should have one within this week. My first day is usually pretty heavy. This time, it is very light and it is worrying me. I don't know if the blood is from UTI or my period, because when it first bleed, it was in the form of blood clots (stick) and not just pink. But after I urinated for more than twice, it made the flow a lot lighter.

Hello,

Thanks for writing to DoctorSpring.com with your health concern.

To me it sounds like a UTI.

Classically, your symptoms of urgency, and cramps are indicative of UTI.

You could be starting your period too at the same time, just spotting because of the infection.

Since there is no itching, burning, redness or foul odour, associated vaginal infection is less likely.

UTI or any kind of stress itself can lead to spotting instead of a full blown period.

The diagnosis of UTI can be easily confirmed by submitting your early morning mid stream urine sample for routine microscopic analysis and urine culture.

Meanwhile, please stay hydrated, drink plenty of water and cranberry juice.

Maintain good perineal hygiene and have protected sex or refrain till the infection subsides.

All the best & Please feel free to discuss further.

I see. Today, I don't have the urgency to urinate as bad as it was yesterday. It is now a lot better. Probably hourly. How do I differentiate whether I am having my period or UTI? I am using a pad at the moment and there are only spots of blood, not too heavy.
I am taking cranberry softgels twice a day starting yesterday. Is there anything that I should do, such as any medicine I should be having, etc.?
Just to clarify, this is not anything like early signs of pregnancy, correct? The last time I had my period was on May 22nd (start date).

Hello again, If it progresses into a full blown period, you have your answer.

I would anyway recommend a urine test, that would tell you for sure.

Would be glad to answer any follow-ups.

Hi Dr. Aarti Vazirani,

My period was just done around yesterday. My urge to pee is a lot better now, much more normal.
I then tested my urine with AZO UTI test strips and the result is that I have a positive Leukocytes and negative Nitrite. I was wondering what that actually means.

Thank you.

Hello.

I am glad your symptoms are better.

The test indicates you have white blood cells ( leukocytes ) in your urine.

A formal lab test is much more informative than this strip test.

A urine culture should be done, as sometimes, these cells in the urine indicate infection, and at times, are a normal finding.

The next step should be a urine culture done in the lab.

Take care.
