What can I do for pain in the hamstring that radiates to the ankle?

Resolved Question:

I was playing tennis this am, ran for a ball (probably shouldn't have tried for it). I heard a pop in my hamstring as I went for it and immediately had to sit down on the court. I sat there awhile. The pain radiates down to my ankle. I had to forfeit the match. Definitely hurts to walk on it.

Hello,

I have read your query.

It looks to be hamstring strain. But to confirm this please answer some questions-

-Is there any swelling.

-Is this pain increases on walking or stretching your leg?

-Is there difficulty in walking?

-Is there any discoloration at back of your thigh?

Hamstring injuries can be very painful. So i advise you to rest completely for the next one week or so. You can try applying some anti-inflammatory spray like volini/Relispray or any other local brand that is available. It will help in reducing the inflammation inside. Also for quicker pain relief, you can use Tab. Diclofenac twice a day after food. Once you reply, i will be able to guide you further.

Patient replied :

I did the RICE method and couldn't walk for a full day. I have been remarkably better each day. My new question is, it doesn't hurt to walk or even run (I did!), I think I would be nervous to play tennis or do odd non forward motions. When is it okay to go back?? While I have iced I have also sat in an infared sauna which does wonders at least temporarily with pain relief.

Hello,

I am very happy that you are improving.

You will be okay after 3 weeks of injury.

If you are able to run then you should gradually come to play slow paced tennis. Meanwhile continue the measures for pain relief.

Take care.
