Reason for hard paying attention, distraction while reading.

Resolved question:
Hi,
I'm currently in my fifth year at long beach state and through-out my college experience ive received low grades. in class i have a very hard time paying attention and when i try to read articles for assignments i find myself thinking about something else while reading and having to reread the paragraph all over again. I've felt like an underachiever in college as i did fairly well in highschool and i wanted to get tested for adult add, my parents are telling me that its just me and they havent really been supportive so im starting to doubt myself. any insight would be appreciated

Hello
Thank you for posting your query at DoctorSpring.com

I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.

I understand that you have problems with your concentration and are easily distractable and you feel that I canbe an adhd. However you have also stated that you were a good achiever during your high school days. Now the illness of adhd doesn't start in adulthood. It starts in early childhood and is generally recognised by the age of 6 years old patientand then persists throughout the life if not treated properly. In you case, as you feel that the symptoms have stated in college and are of a short duration then instead of adhd I feel it could very well be a mild depression.
For this I would suggest that you should take a course of antidepressants. Bupropion is a good antidepressant for you as it will take care of the attention issues as well. It is generally started in the dose of 150mg and then gradually increased to 300mg per day. Along with this I suggest that you should do some meditation and yoga like relaxation exercises as well. You may gauze the improvement over time.

Hope this helps
In case if you have any further query, do let me know.
Kind regards,

I appreciate your efforts in trying to help me. Looking through the symptoms of adult adhd seem to answer a lot of the problems ive been having through out college. Problems like misplacing key items, starting tasks but not finishing them and problems financially due to impulse purchases. I feel like i cant seem to study or get work done until its the very last day and I absolutely have to do it, even then at times it feels like a lost cause. Growing up i played lots of video games, and even in that situation when the game got too hard i wouldnt finish it. I've generally been a happy-go-lucky, optimistic person which is why its hard to see myself suffering from depression. However I am willing to take medication, does the medication you reccomened to me have to be prescribed? Furthermore if you have any questions to ask me to further assist you in my assessment please feel free to ask, again i want to thank you for your time.

Hello.

I understand that depression may seem unlikely in your case but it does present in a variety of ways and one may not be aware of it.
Yes, Bupropion is a prescription medication.
