Plugged ears with CHRONIC INFECTIONS. Will become deaf?

Resolved Question:

HI -

My bf has had a history of chronic ear infections. LIke several per year. This last September he had a severe one that got really infected and he had to spend about 3 days in the hospital.

He has never regained hearing in his left ear....it still feels pluged

Last tuesday....he started to get an infection in his right ear. Immediately he went to the doctor. And on Tuesday he was put on Amoxicillan. That said, both his ears are plugged up and he can't hear a thing. He says it feels like his head is in a fish bowl.

It is Saturday and he has sporadice pangs of ear pain every two hours that last a minute. But he isn't in the excruciating pain he was in September. That said, he still can't hear a thing...his ears are clearly plugged up.

Liquid is coming out. He has a low grade fever, like 99.5

Given his plugged up ears for the past two days, should he call his doctor immediately?

I find his doctor isn't aggressive. He hasn't heard anything out of his left ear for three months...isn't his doctor afraid he is going to go deaf?

Hello,

Thank you for posting your query on DoctorSpring.com. I can understand your problem.

Your friend is suffering from recurrent ear infection. He is suffering from left sided hearing loss for 3 months and now right sided also.he had ear discharge also. He is started on amoxicillin.

Most likely he is has eustachean tube dysfunction ( tube connecting ear and nose) causing recurrent ear infection. He may also have perforation in ear drum (which is the membrane that separates the outer ear from the inner ear).
He needs examination by ENT specialist again. I would suggest that he get an audiogram and tympanometry to check type and severity of hearing loss. Other investigations can be decided based on result of these.

We can add tab. Levocetrizine 5 mg one at night for 3 weeks. Ear drops can be decided based on ear examination finding.

Hope this helps

Best regards
