Once the mercury goes inside the cell, it will be dead automatically due to change in physiological processes. If the mercury is very minute in quantity only few cells will die, if it is in significant amount, then it will cause significant damage, say for example, a major portion of neurons will die.
Only when it is in significant amounts , it will enter the cell and cause death and the more number of cells that are involved the more chances of having systemic symptoms.
