Fluoxetine related hypertension.

Resolved Question:

On March13th I changed from 60mg of Paroxtine a.m. to 40mg of flouxetine a.m.. I also take Doxepin 200mg p.m.. I have been taking the doxepin for 12 years and paroxitine for 20 years. I have pain control issues, depression and anxiety. I asked my Dr. if I could switch to flouxetine which he said was ok although he also mentioned that there were other medications he would have suggested.

I took 20mg of flouxetine the first day than I bumped it up to 40mg the second day. I felt lethargic the first day so I decided to bump it up. When I was at the drs. office after being on it for 5 days they took my blood pressure it was 160/90 normal for me is 130/90 sometimes less. He wanted me to get get a couple blood pressure readings over six weeks so he could monitor the situation. He did feel that it would go down with time.

I went to get it checked yesterday and it is still reading 165/90sh. I feel fine otherwise maybe a little edgy. My mood has improved. Is there anything I should be concerned about?

Hello and thankyou for approaching DoctorSpring with your query.
I have gone through your case and understand your concern.

Your B.P rise could be related to many factors, like your mood , stress, or autonomic (central nervous system) over activity. The medication fluoxetine itself too could cause a rise in your blood pressure, but right now it is too early to say.
I would advise you to continue with your medications and recheck your B.P in a weeks time.
If it still is high you can consider switching your medication.
Fluoxetine can cause hypertension in about 1%-10% of the patients and Doxepin in less than 3% of the patients.
Do inform your doctor about the change in dose you are taking from 20 mg to 40 mg.
I would advise to change your doses in consult with your doctor. As of now continue the present dose and depending on the following B.P readings you can consider going back on your old medication or other medication options.

I hope this has helped. Feel free to follow up.
Thankyou
