Spotting/light bleeding after DEPOPROVERA SHOT. What to do?

Resolved Question:

I was given the depo provera shot for the first time about 6 weeks ago as a form of birth control. Since having the shot I have had continuous spotting/light bleeding.
I saw the dr last week to try to stop the bleeding and was prescribed tranexamic acid for 5 days. It slowed the bleeding more, but did not stop it.
I went back to the dr today for further advice and he prescribed me primolut N (norethisterone 5mg) 3 times a day for 10 days. He didn't explain to me what he was giving me, and I am confused now as to why he has given me more progesterone.....won't that make the bleeding worse since the progesterone in the depo started it?
My question is whether it is likely to actually stop the bleeding, or whether I am better off just continuing on the tranexamic acid?
I just want this bleeding to stop, it is making me depressed

Hello,
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
The Depo Provera contains progesterone. Erratic, unpredictable bleeding and spoting is a known side effect. The frequency of unscheduled bleeding is highest in the first few months of use, and then begins to diminish.
The treatment DOES consist of more progesterone, as it stabilizes the effect of the drug in the depot, and controls the bleeding. So rest assured, you have been given the right treatment.
Primolut N is very likely to stop the bleeding, and when the time for the next shot is due, please opt for another method of birth control. Few women experience such irregular bleeding on the Depo, but when it does happen, it becomes very difficult to manage, and requires multiple and frequent supplemental medication.
So for right now please go with the Primolut N, it is the right drug.
All the best.
Please feel free to discuss further.
