Resolved question:
I have been sexually active for over a year and a half but today I discovered what I think is some sort of septate hymen. It is slightly different to the normal septate hymen though because instead of the band of skin going straight across the middle of my vaginal opening, it is slightly to the side, resulting in one bigger hole (the reason I can have sex) and one smaller hole (can only fit one finger but hurts when does). Although sex is fine most of the time, I think this band of skin can explain the occasional discomfort I feel during sex. My question is could I attempt to break it myself (hygienically of course), and if so how should I go about it and make sure the remaining skin doesn't hang out of my vagina after it is broken. I do not particularly want to have a medical procedure to do it. Thanks

I can understand your anxiety and will answer your queries to the best possible. A hymen is a thin membrane that covers the vagina. It is usually half moon shaped. Sometimes there can be extra tissues that result in opening in the middle known as Split hymen or septate hymen. It is usually present since birth and occurs due to improper development of the hymen. Patient with this condition usually presents with difficulty in inserting the tampon through the hymen and difficult in removing it out after it fully expands. Patient also experiences severe pain during sex due to the tear in the hymen. These symptoms are not established till the patient attains puberty. I would suggest you to get a complete physical examination done and creating an extra band of tissue to form a natural opening for the vagina can treat it. However this can be also torn off during sex. Hope this helps.
