Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
In your semen analysis report, the sperm motility is suboptimal. The rapid progressive fraction, which should be more than 25 % of total sperms, is 0 . This means that the number of sperms is normal, but their movement is not normal. They are sluggishly motile or non motile at all.
Fast moving sperms in good number are essential to maximize the chances of pregnancy. There could be various reasons for decreased sperm motility. First is mental or psychological stress, anxiety, tension at work, prolonged periods of abstinence, recent illness or fever, recent surgery etc.Working for prolonged periods in hot environments, wearing excessively tight undergarments and trousers - could be a reason.Hormonal imbalances, genetic abnormalities, infection in the genito - urinary system - these are all potential causes. Smoking, drinking, alcohol, intake of dangerous drugs, obesity, exposure to toxic chemicals or metals - all these can be contributory factors.
Please visit an Andrologist / Urologist as the next step to have a complete evaluation regarding the exact reason of your abnormal sperm motility. Most of the causes are treatable, so do not worry.
Maintain an ideal BMI, and exercise regularly, plus have a healthy diet.
Also, after treatment also, if the motility does not improve ( give yourself atleast 6 months of treatment ), then do not worry in that scenario also, as there are newer methods like IUI ( intra uterine insemination ) and ICSI ( intra cytoplasmic sperm injection ) which are available to treat men with subnormal sperm counts and motility. Also , as you continue your treatment protocol, have a thorough examination of your wife, to rule out any concurrent problems.
All the best.
Please feel free to discuss further, or ask for more clarifications.
Regards,
Dr Vazirani
