Resolved Question:

I am concerned about this new respiratory virus. I am 58 years old patientols. I have had a persistent cough for about 2 months. I have been prescribed steroids, allergy meds, and now antibiotics. I ran a fever for 3 days with highest temp at 103° maintaining a low grade temp for several days off and on. At this piint I am still coughing but not as deep and often throughout day and night. I can go at least 2 hours before coughing again. I had coughed up sone yellow glob for a few days. Had 2 clear xrays.

Hello.
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
Although i am worried about you having symptoms for 2 months, i do wish to reassure you that it has nothing to do with this new respiratory virus.
Your symptomatology fits into allergic nasal stuffiness, post nasal drip, and allergic cough with probably some post viral hyperreactivity.
I suggest to look out for any allergen that may be causing this persistent problem- probably a new soap. deo, change in food habits, fungal moulds in room, bedroom with new carpets that need a dusting, new pet etc
Once that is ruled out, a course of anti allergics, anti histaminics and anti tussive should help.
Hope this helped. kindly revert in case you feel more help is needed
Regards,

I was on a prescription fot allrrgies. They did not help at all neithrr did the steroids. Can you rule out cancer. No, I'm not paranoid. haha. My nephew had very similar syptoms when he was 9 and had lymphoma tcell. My sister swears thats what I have the same syptoms. Could it be bronchial? Are there certain tests I should ask my doctor to check out?

Hello.
Glad to see you in good spirits.
Your symptoms are very vague, and suggestive symptoms of any chronic illness were not mentioned. I didn't ask any leading questions by purpose, so that i will get an unbiased reply.
A normal looking chest x ray rules out bronchial malignancies successfully in 80% cases.
A routine blood examination also wil be contributive.
The investigation of choice will be a CT scan of thorax.
However i see no reasons for why it should be done now.
The treatment of allergy is going to start out finding why it came out suddenly now, recognise a possible trigger, avoid it along with medicines. Medicines alone will not help.
I Suggest you to meet your family GP, discuss this matter in detail, try to pinpoint what was the triggering factor, and why its persisting. He can also counsel you regarding blood tests. I will suggest a course of monteleukast + Cetrizine tablets in night, Steroid nasal spray twice a day, and a cough syrup containing dextromethorphan / codiene. It can be modified by your gp according to availability.
