Resolved question:
Dear doctor, Can oral sex result in a transmission of genital warts to a non-infected person? I am 24 years old and had sex with a girl recently. It was just an oral sex and not a penetrative one. However, I touched her genital areas for some second and haven’t fingered it by penetrating. I found warts in her genital area and am not sure whether I touched them or not. She told that there is nothing to worry about it. But I was not convinced and went to a free clinic and there I was told that nothing to worry about that. All these happened about 3 weeks ago and there are no issues till now, from my part. But I went through some articles in internet, about HPVs, stating that a sexual contact or intercourse is not necessary for getting the virus transmitted. It is said that a skin contact can spread the virus. Is it true? I would like to see another girl soon for sex but would like to know about a chance that I may spread virus to her. How long it will take the virus to cause any visible or detectable change in my body, if I am infected? For the next course of sex, I am planning to use condoms. What will you recommend and suggest? Expect an answer as soon as possible.

There are mainly two types of viruses which cause genital warts. They are the HSV-2 type and HPV type. Of these, HPVs are of more than 70 types and some cause cervical cancers while the rest causes genital warts. What you read is right and HPVs can be transmitted through skin to skin contact. An oral sex is sufficient to transmit the virus to you resulting in genital warts which can be seen soon. In most cases of HPV infections, genital warts will appear at about 3 to 5 months after getting infected. Also, HPV can stay dormant in affected persons and those people will act as carriers and transmitters of virus without themselves knowing as carriers. Infection is noticed once when one starts getting genital warts or cervical cancer. Unfortunately, there is no complete medical cure for HPVs. But your body immune system will fight it and make it dormant for years. It happens after getting warts and warts also will go off by their own. Hope my answer helps. Take care.
