Resolved question:
I've been having lower abdominal pain for about 2 weeks now. It's been accompanied by a fever, some nausea and lower back pain, along with a general feeling of fatigue and moodiness. My lower abdomen also feels firmer than normal. I also haven't had a normal period in over a month. It's been a dark brown discharge type period that I only need a panty liner for. I was diagnosed with genital warts about a month ago (have been using aldara), and also had unprotected sex (he pulled out) about 12 times in the 2 weeks before I was diagnosed. I was not on birth control. I'm just curious if this could be something associated with HPV (or a side effect of Aldara), or if a pregnancy could be involved. I've always been irregular with my periods but they've always been red and only brown at the end of it.

Hello, I understand that you are suffering from lower abdominal pain for 2 weeks. Lower abdominal pains or aches are common in women because of anatomical structures in that area like reproductive system, urinary system and the gastro intestinal system. The reproductive system consists of ovaries, ureters and urinary bladders where as the gastro intestinal system involves the intestines, appendix, stomach and the pancreas. The most common cause is dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, and ectopic pregnancy, cysts in the uterus or fallopian tube, pelvic inflammatory disease, urinary tract infections, appendicitis. I would suggest you to get a complete evaluation, blood tests, and renal function test, urine analysis, ultrasound abdomen and pelvis and review the reports with your doctor. The light brown discharge that you have described could be due to a number of reasons. However in your case the light brown bleeding is due to your periods. Brownish color of the discharge is a mixture of blood and mucus. It usually occurs for about 1-2 days prior to the onset of the next menstrual cycle and generally lasts for 2 days. If it progresses more than 2 days, then it could indicate infection, inflammation, and hormonal imbalance. It is usually odorless, but if it has a foul odor, then it is suggestive of infections like chlamydia, herpes. The other causes that can result in bleeding are during miscarriage, ectopic gestation. It would be best to wait till the next period and if it still doesn't appear, then you can do home pregnancy test and consult your doctor. Thank you.
