Resolved question:
Dear doctor, I have been in a state of misery for a quite long time. I am 21 years old and have only one testicle. But it seems to pose no harm to me. I am as able as anyone else of my age, I believe. I was not thinking about it for quite a while. But now, I am very much disappointed about that. Please help me out. I have heard about people who lived with only one testicle. Will it cause any problem in future, especially after marriage?

Thank you for using Ask a Doctor Services from Doctor Spring. Firstly, don't be disappointed with this problem. I would definitely try to help the best possible I can. Having one testicle is not a very major problem, but it is important to rule out undescended testis. Sometimes the testis get held up in the abdomen or inguinal canal and fail to descend downwards. This condition is rare but if present can cause serious problem like testicular cancer. I would recommend you to consult a male gynaecologist who would examine you thoroughly; sometimes the doctor can palpate the testis in the inguinal canal. If it is not apparent, then the doctor might advise for USG abdomen which would help to locate the undescended testis in the abdomen. As far as fertility is concerned, there is no guarantee that people with two testes are completely fertile. One testicle is usually sufficient to produce semen and testosterone. If this is concerning you, then I would suggest a simple semen analysis test which would give a fair idea about your fertility. If you have an average sperm count it will give good pregnancy outcomes, even if otherwise You need not worry much about your fertility as the Improvement in sperm retrieval techniques and micromanipulation techniques, such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection, has led to excellent fertilization and pregnancy outcomes of treatment cycles. My advice is to consult a male gynaecologist, rule out undescended testis and for evaluating fertility perform a semen analysis test. Hope this helps. Please feel free to ask if you need further help. Thank you.
