I got a strained calf muscle after felling downhill.

Resolved question:

Hai doctor,

I hurt my calf muscle myself by hiking up a sprint to a steep hill and falling down. The incident gave me a tearing sensation in my calf and not with much pain. Pain is increased whenever I try to move my foot. When I exert force, I start experiencing pain. I don’t have an insurance cover and thinks that I can adjust with it myself. Can you suggest me some tips on making it feel good? Should I give some heat there or put some ice in the muscles? Should I use anything else to make my walking correct?

Thank you for your question. From the information you provided, I think it is a medial calf injury. This can happen when media head of muscles get moved off from their position. This can cause acute pain also. Ice and compression are the common first aids to be given. This problem is also called weekend warrior, as it is commonly seen in athletes. Primary treatment will last for about 24 to 72 hours. Elastic bands or warps are used to give compression. Normal movement of limbs are possible if it is pain free. It will also heal up in a period of 8-12 weeks, which changes from individual to individual. For controlling pain and swelling, anti-inflammatory medications are given. Drugs include Aleve and motrin.
