HIV test interpretation.

Resolved question:
Hi Doctor,

2 months back I had loose motions which lasted for a day
And then I became fine without any medicines. However I started having mild muscle pain. Later on the muscle pain increased and I came down with fever and diarrhoea ( last month ). Antibiotics were given by doctor and I recovered in about 4 days. I had a blood test for typhoid and it was not detected.

Since then I have been having mild joint and muscle pain . My wife too had Urinary tract infection around the same time (2 months back)and was cured by antibiotics. Both of us have the same mild joint and muscle pain.

There is no swelling of joints.

Unfortunately I googled my symptoms and one of the sites said that HIV could cause these symptoms. So I did an antibody screening test as well. HIV 1 and 2 enhanced chemiluminescence test and my results were Non - Reactive. I am married and have had no sex outside marriage since last 3 years.

My body temperature varies from 98.6 in the morning to 99.6 at night. Please advise if this normal.

Please let me know what could be causing the joint and muscle pains.

Thank you.

Hello and thankyou for approaching DoctorSpring with your query.
I have gone through your case and understand your concern.

You have tested negative for HIV and you have nothing to worry.
Your symptoms and your wife's symptoms seem to be related to a bacterial infection.
Please can you answer a few questions so that I can give you an informed opinion.

1) When did you have diarrhea and after how many days did your joint and muscle pain begin?
2) When did your wife have Urinary tract infection and after how many days after that did she begin with the muscle and joint pains?
3) Which joints are causing pain in both you and your wife?
4) Are you or you wife have any symptoms of pain while passing urine , increased frequency of urination or any vaginal discharge in your wife or urethral discharge in you?
5) Are you'll having any conjuctivitis or any skin lesions?
7) Are you'll having any sorethroat or cold at present?

Please reply as a follow up and I will advise you accordingly.
Thankyou

Hi Doctor,

Thank you for your reply. Please find my answers below.

1) When did you have diarrhea and after how many days did your joint and muscle pain begin?

Diarrhea started 2 months back. After around 3 weeks I started getting joint and muscle pain.

2) When did your wife have Urinary tract infection and after how many days after that did she begin with the muscle and joint pains?

My wife had Urinary tract infection around 6-7 weeks back. She did not actually say anything about muscle pains until I told her about mine.

3) Which joints are causing pain in both you and your wife?

My wife has knee pain. I have pain in my knees and forearms, wrist, heels and near my pelvis (this is cleared now). The pain is very mild and I am unable to notice it when I am at work. The pain appears at times and then disappears. The pain moves around my limbs actually. I sometimes feel that the pain is more in the muscles near the joint than the joint itself.

4) Are you or you wife have any symptoms of pain while passing urine , increased frequency of urination or any vaginal discharge in your wife or urethral discharge in you?

My wife had pain when passing urine and increased frequency of urination, no vaginal discharge. I have / had no urethral discharge.

5) Are you'll having any conjuctivitis or any skin lesions?
No.

7) Are you'll having any sorethroat or cold at present?
I had a blocked nose last week which cleared in 2 - 3 days. The cold is not completely cured yet. No soar throat.

If I remember correctly all these started after food from a local restaurant and my diarrhoea 2 months back.

At the moment the frequency of pain is lesser than before, but its not completely gone. I keep getting headaches as well in the morning which clears by itself in sometime.

Hello and thankyou for your reply.
I have gone through the additional information.
Your joint pain seems to be related to a viral cause. Less likely to be related to the bacterial infection. But we will require further tests to make a definite diagnosis and to rule out other cause of joint/muscle pain.
Since your joints pains are not severe, likely to be due to a viral infection which will be self limiting(clear on its own gradually)

Nevertheless I would advise you to get the following tests done for you and your wife.
1) Complete blood count + ESR (since you have done this test no need to repeat it for you)
2) CRP, ANA, RF, CCP antibody
3) Creatinine kinase,
4) Liver Function tests
Depending on the tests further testing may or may not be required.

As of now I would advise that you take the NSAID tablet Ibuprofen after a meal when required if the pain is bothering you.
I hope this has helped.
Feel free to follow up with the test results.
Take care
Thankyou
