Hello,
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
Before answering your questions , i would to know further,
you have done only total cholesterol, but it is essential to do a complete Lipid profile which consists of LDL,HDL,VLDL,S.Triglycerides.
You said you take alcohol , but you didn't specify the quantity.
Health benefits of moderate alcohol use
Moderate alcohol consumption may provide some health benefits. It may:
- Reduce your risk of developing and dying from heart disease
- Possibly reduce your risk of ischemic stroke (when the arteries to your brain become narrowed or blocked, causing severely reduced blood flow)
- Possibly reduce your risk of diabetes
Even so, the evidence about the possible health benefits of alcohol isn't certain, and alcohol may not benefit everyone who drinks.
Guidelines for moderate alcohol use by MAYO CLINIC
If you choose to drink alcohol, do so only in moderation. For healthy adults, that means up to one drink a day for women of all ages and men older than age 65, and up to two drinks a day for men age 65 and younger.
Examples of one drink include:
- Beer: 12 fluid ounces (355 milliliters)
- Wine: 5 fluid ounces (148 milliliters)
- Distilled spirits (80 proof): 1.5 fluid ounces (44 milliliters)
-
Drink alcohol only in moderation — or not at all
The latest dietary guidelines make it clear that no one should begin drinking or drink more frequently on the basis of potential health benefits. So don't feel pressured to drink alcohol. But if you do drink alcohol and you're healthy, there's probably no need to stop as long as you drink responsibly and in moderation.
Now coming to your questions , you are not at serious threat ,but it is essential to live a healthy life.Eating non vegetarian is not bad, but it can good for health if you take Egg white, fish, chicken, but avoid too much of red meat .
Eat plenty of green vegetables and fruits.
Exercise at least 45 to 60 min for at least 5 days in a week.
I would like to review with your Lipid profile.
Regards
Dr Satish

Dr, thanks for the reply. Im really stressed as my SGOT and SGPT are 183 & 191 in values which seems very high. Im not able to upload my results here. And my Lipid profile says Cholesterol total 230, TGL - 244 which needs to be under 165, VLDL Cholesterol 49 which needs to be under 30 & CHOL/HDL/Ratio 4.5 and says normal risk Iam in. Please advise me in both the cases what medicine shld I take? Im trying to stop alcohol permanently, but taking little time to,come out of it though I don't drink more than a beer and half bottle or 5 larges which is 60 ml of hot drinks 3 -4 times a week. Please help me to avoid the stress and save me to come back to normal, and can I? And Im just become a father.
Ramesh
SGOT SGPT values indicate acute liver injury, could be from the alcohol itself.
Even minor amounts of alcohol can cause a lot of damage to the liver now.
So, you have to be strong and give it up completely.
You can take syrup silymarin 2 teaspoons twice daily for 2 weeks. Also, follow a bland diet and avoid non vegetarian food for the next 2 weeks.
Repeat LFT after 2 weeks.
Once you cut down alcohol, and lose around 5-7 kgs, you will automatically see the difference even in the cholesterol levels.
You can repeat cholesterol values after 3 months of strict diet control, no alcohol, and moderate exercise daily.
