Food poisoning after eating raw scallops and sea urchin

Resolved Question:

I am on an island in Hawaii. Two day ago I ate some raw scallops and sea urchin at a high end resort restaurant, only to wind up violently throwing up 4 hours later. I was sick all evening and had stabbing pains the entire next day. The following day (yesterday) I had dark urine.

Today I have clay colored stool which I have never had in my life.

I am fatigued, have a loss of appetite but do not feel ill or in urgent need of care. Just tired.

When I reviewed these symptoms online it ranged from urgent to Hepatitis A.

Do I require immediate medical care and if not what can I do?

I am still on the island.

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query at DoctorSpring.com.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

Dark urine and pale stools indicate that flow of bile is affected ( medically called as cholestasis).
The problem could be either in the liver or in the bile flow tract.
Hepatitis A is just one of the causes.

The next step to do is to get a liver function test to confirm cholestasis.
An ultrasound scan should be done to see whether the cholestasis is due to issues in the liver or outside the liver in the bile flow tract.
Meanwhile you can take the medication ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA).

Getting all these done at the earliest is advisable.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.

Patient replied :

Thank you doctor. I started drinking a lot of water after reading the online posts and after going to the bathroom my stool started darkening to a mid color brown. I truly ope that is a positive sign.

I will go to the doctors tomorrow for tests as they are closed today.

However, is this a positive sign?

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me with more questions.
Yes, that is a positive sign.
But unless a liver function test is done, we cannot confirm it.
So the first step is to get the liver function test done.
