Fluttering/skipping a beat with INDIGESTION. Cause?

Resolved Question:

Just yesterday I've been getting the feeling that my heart is fluttering/ skipping a beat, and it keeps happening randomly though out the day, while resting or walking. The day before yesterday though, i had slight indigestion after i drank 32 OZ of orange juice. I've also been waking up much earlier than normal for no specific reason(usually i sleep like a log).

I'm only 24 and very concerned... I've also been eating quite a lot of baked potatoes recently(for about a month now), a friend said that can cause heart problems.

Drinking water seems to help; i feel less flutters.Deep breaths also seem to help. Though I'm very scared at this point so that might be an emotional thing. My pee is clear.

I dont drink or smoke, and i have athsma, though i havent had an attack for 4 years now.

Hello,
Thank you for your query at DotorSprng.com.
32oz is a large amount of orange juice. The symtoms described by you are suggestive of extra systoles likely ventricular premature contractions or atrial premature contractions. THe best test would be to have an ecg during the time when you have these missed beat symptoms. If that is not possible, a 24 hour holter test should be able to capture these abnormalities on ecg. Anxiety could lead to lack of sleep as well as these arrhythmias. A 2d echo to look up for structural cardiac abnormalities is also advisable.
Hope this helps, would be glad to answer any queries.

Patient replied :

I'll cut back on drinking so much orange juice and stick to water then. I went to the hospital. where they did an ecg,a chest Xray and analysis of my blood. Im attaching the pictures of the results they gave me. If the pics are bad, i can also scan the papers on monday and send them. They also said almost the same thing as you did, but wanted me to contact a cardiologist. Thank you so much for all the help so far!

Hello,

The reports are essentially normal except that the ecg shows mild abnormality in form of abnormal origin of atrial electrical activity. That however is unlikely to be a cause of your symptoms.

If you are too concerned about the missed beats I would suggest a 24 hour holter examination and 2d echo. That will rule out any serious arrhythmia and structural abnormality of the heart.

Feel free to discuss further,
Regards
