Fever, chills, painful urination. Should I start ANTIBIOTICS?

Resolved Question:

hello
I have a fever of 38 deg. Chills and frequent painful urination. I also received a flu vaccine 6 hours earlier before my fever. The doctor also gave me a urine test and Ural powder but no antibiotics.

I have some rulide at home. Should I start taking it? Should I start taking panadol? When should I seek medical advice again? Thanks

Hello,
Thank you for your medical query at DoctorSpring.com
I understand your concern.
Although, the fever can be attributed to the vaccine, the painful urination is not one of the side-effects. It does seem like you have an UTI.
I will advise you to wait for the urine report and based on that we can proceed with antibiotics. Rulide won't be effective in urinary tract infections.
Regarding, Panadol, yes, you should take once every 6 hours after food, to control the fever.
You can also consume cranberry juice without sugar or cranberry pills. They will help in reducing the pain and burning urination. Keep drinking plenty of water.
Once you have the urine report, please let me know.
Regards.

Hello Doctor
Your requested to see the results of my urine test. Since your last comment my symptoms worsen. There was rushing to urinate but very little came out. The colour is yellow and smelly. Then I saw the doctor again and he prescribed the antibiotic and wants a blood test. He suspects prostititis. My fever from the fluvax has dropped to near normal 37 deg.
I have attached my latest pathology report.. I'm taking Norfloxacin 400mg twice a day for 2 days. There's some improvement. What more should I check out? How long does it take to recover in most cases? Why did this happen?

Hello Robert,
Yes, you are losing a lot of blood through urine and also there are lots of leucocytes suggestive of uncontrolled infection.
From your reports, it will take at least 2 weeks to get better.
Blood test makes sense, as uncontrolled UTI can lead to prostatitis, which takes a long time to heal and is recurrent.
Please coninue the medicines for at least 2 weeks, and repeat the test. If required the doctor can obtain prostatic secretions to find out if there is any other organism too. Also, an ultrasound KUB will be helpful in finding out if there is any pathology related to kidney or bladder.
Regards.
