Dysentery with high platelet disorder

Resolved Question:

I had not been feeling great for the past three days and was bloated. Last night I had terrible gas and when I went to the toilet I had to grab the trashcan I vomited everything I had eaten earlier. At first I passed a normal stool but it carried on all night and changed from hard stool to diarrea and finally I saw blood - red blood - not much but I had terrible gas again and for the rest of the night I had to stay near the toilet. Finally I think I had come to the end but the gas pains lingered all night. This morning I passed gas in bed and fluid came out - light amount of blood on my night gown. I have been to the toilet again several times this morning but I haven't passed anything but gas. I am on Hydroureah for a blood problem I have had for the past year. A very large amount of platelets, the Oncologist said I have mutant platelets that multiply. What should I do or take?

Hello,

Thank you for choosing DoctorSpring.

I have discussed your concern with our team Oncologist.
There are two major causes for this bloated up feeling and diarrhoea mixed with blood. The most probably cause is a stomach bug - a bacterial / protozoa infection of the stomach causing these symptoms know as dysentery. This could be unrelated to the platelet condition.

Second possibilty is a side effect of Hydroxyurea ( You probably are suffering from Essential Thromobocytosis or Polycythemia )Although presence of blood in stool is not very common, diarrhoea can occur as a side effect of hydroxyurea.

I would recommend a baseline evaluation - complete blood and platelet count. You might also require an antibiotic course to treat the dysentery. You should get in touch with your Doctor for this. Meanwhile drink plenty of fluids. Avoid irritant and spicy food.

Hope this helps
