I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.
Yes, you should not take Dulcolax over a long period of time.
I would like to have some more information before i can assist you.
1. Your age and sex?
2. Since when are you constipated?
3. Any other medical illness like diabetes, hypothyroidism?
4. Are you any other medications like cough syrup, calcium supplements, opioid analgesics?
5. Any tests done so far?
Get back to me with these information and I would give my opinion.

Hi Doctor,
I am 46year old male.
I have had constipation for about a six months now,
I take antisicotic medication (for schizophrania) and I changed from one brand to another, I had constipation with the older medication but it wasnt as severe.
I had a colonscopy a year ago and every thing was fine.
Regards

Hi,
Thanks for the additional information.
Your constipation is probably due to antipsychotic medication.
Good that your colonoscopy did not reveal anything abnormal.
I would advise you to get a colon transit study done to assess how the colon works and whether it is contributing to constipation.
Meanwhile you can consider taking fiber supplements along with lactulose for relief from constipation.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.

Patient replied :

Hi Doctor
How long can I keep using milk of magnesia?, since I have been on it daily for four months now.

Hi,
You can take milk of magnesia as long as you have symptoms.
But also try to increase the intake of high fiber diet and fluid intake.
Let me know if you have any more symptoms.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.
