Chest hurts when cough, breathe with draining sinuses. AMOXICILLIN.

Resolved Question:

I am currently taking Amoxicillin for a sinus infection (day 6 of 10) that I was prescribed at a local urgent care clinic (I don't have a regular doctor right now, since mine recently moved away). I am on spring break (teacher) so I've been able to rest - but no tmuch else. My sinuses started to drain, which they hadn't been doing, and I had a couple of low days and then started to improve. The sinus stuff is mostly cleared out. However, I can't shake my cough, which is productive and deep in my chest. My chest actually hurts when I cough and breathe, and even though I am coughing up some stuff it doesn't seem to be getting much better. I also still feel wiped out, even though I haven't done anything but rest for days. Should I go back to the urgent care, or is this sounding normal to you?

Hello,
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
I understand your concern.
What started as a sinus infection, has not been adequately controlled, and now has developed into a chest infection as well. Amoxicillin is not adequate in such situations. I will advise you to take a stronger antibiotic such as Augmentin 650 mg twice daily which is a combination of Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid. This works much better than amoxicillin in such infections. Moreover, you also need an antihistaminic like Tab. Montelukast+Levocetirizine combination ( Montek-LC ), this will help in draining the trapped secretions which provides the nidus for infections. Please update me if the aforementioned treatment is helpful in 3 days.
Feel free to discuss further,
Regards.

Thanks for your response. I did go back to the urgent care to talk to the PA again. She suggested I increase my fluids and take pain relievers. As of today I feel better, though that happened a couple of weeks ago and didn't last! Hopefully this time I am done. If I have more issues I won't wait for a follow up. Thanks.
