I have laryngopharyngeal reflux (aka silent reflux). I don't have the classic symptoms of GERD (I do have occasional heartburn, but very rarely) and the primary symptoms are occasional hoarseness and a "lump" in the throat that doesn't go away.

I take Nexium 40mg, which seems to make at least some difference. The vast majority of the literature revolves around traditional acid reflux and which medications are best. However, given the variation I have, I'm not sure which direction to go - I'd probably continue with the Nexium if given a first choice, but it's expensive.

(1) So given what I have, do you think there is a difference among prescription Nexium, this new Nexium OTC, Prilosec, and Prilosec OTC?

(2) Or am I better off with H2 blockers like Zantac? or some combination?

(3) If I empty the contents Nexium capsule and take with applesauce, would the effect be the same as swallowing the capsule. (my problem is not with swallowing, but with the gelatin in the capsule.)
