Chances of transmitting HERPES with cold sore on lips.

Resolved question:
Hi Doctor,

I have a question regarding oral herpes transmission to my partners genitals. I have had cold sores my whole life and I recently engaged in oral sex with my partner (I am male, she is female). About a day or day and a half later (maybe 36 hours later) I noticed a tiny cold sore start appearing on my lip. It wasn't there whilst performing oral sex.

I am wondering if I would have been contagious 36 hours before the coldsore appeared? I am really worried about transmission to my partner.

She has no history of cold sores, however has never been tested for them either. She is also 33 years old patientold.

Is it true that if she already has the hsv1 virus in her body third would give her significant protection about catching it genitally?

Thanks

Hello

Thanks for posting your query at DoctorSpring.com

I can understand your concern.

You could have transmitted the virus to her, though you got the blister after 36 hours, you still have a history of recurrence of the cold sores, which could have led to the transmission.

Ideally the transmission is highest in presence of blisters, but there is viral shedding in absence of blisters also.

You probably got the blister because of the friction in the area and re activation of the virus.

Even though she might be having hsv 1 virus already, she could still get lesions. But it's unpredictable, her immune system may even fight the virus and she may not get any manifestations.

Please let me know if you have any queries.

Take care,
Regards.
