Cause for high CALCIUM, CHOLESTROL levels in blood.

Resolved Question:

Hi Doctor

My name is Amrith and I am 29 years old. Recently I did a medical master checkup from a Diagnostic center (Blood and Urine) which is part of my office annual checkup.

I am a concerned that my Calcium level is shown as high (12.4). I browsed the internet on it and found some scary causes.

I am attaching my blood report, kindly go through it and let me know if I need to do any further examinations or tests.

My ultrasound report says Stage I fatty liver

I am currently taking a medication for blood pressure, prescribed by a doctor ( Telmisartan 20mg )

The Cholestrol report is also not in proper range. Please recommend any medications or changes in food habits etc.

Thanks in advance
Amrith

Hello,
Thanks for your query at DoctorSpring.com
I understand your concern
I have reviewed your reports.
Elevated calcium levels may be associated with dehydration. Are you suffering from symptoms like depression/constipation/frequent urination/loss of appetite/weakness/bone pains? It is advised to get your parathyroid hormone levels checked.
Also, cholesterol levels show abnormalities such as very low levels of HDL (good cholesterol), and elevated levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) and total cholesterol and elevated triglyceride levels which is not a very good sign. You are also undergoing treatment of hypertension. You need to consider serious lifestyle modification to prevent yourself from any cardiovascular event in future. These include;
1. abstinence/reduction from alcohol consumption
2. avoid smoking
3. take healthy diet containing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy, fish (high omega 3 fatty acids), nuts, legumes, avoiding junk foods
4. Regular exercise atleast for 30 minutes/day e.g. running, cycling, jogging
5. moderate sodium consumption (2300mg/day)
6. Start lipid lowering drugs such as statins, niacin, fibrates with consultation of a cadiologist
High levels of triglycerides may be the cause of fatty liver.
Hope it helps. Feel free to discuss further
Regards

Hi Doctor
Thank You for your response.
Before doing the tests I did not drink water at all, Could that be the reason?, I don't have any such symptoms, sometimes I get a pain on my left upper leg bone which goes away. Should I drink lot of water and repeat calcium test? I'll try to get parathyroid levels checked.
Can I try to reduce my cholesterol levels only by dieting, exercises etc, Can we stop statins if cholesterol levels come down or are in normal range?
Please let me know.

Thanks
Amrith

Hello,
Yes, dehydration could be a reason behind hypercalcemia.
Also, yes get the tests done as advised, and you can definitely bring cholesterol levels down through diet. We can stop statins in the future if that happens.
Regards.

Hi Doctor
I appreciate that you are continously helping me. I repeated the calium test again along with iPTH.
The PTH result will come only after a few days. Now calcium shows 9.8 now.
Please see the report attached and let me know if its ok.
Regards
Amrith

Hello,
Thanks for getting back. As I said earlier this was transient rise calcium. That is a good thing. Let's wait for PTH levels. Till then you need not worry.
Thanks

Patient replied :

Hi Doctor

Amrith
