Cause for elevated GGT, ALT with no symptoms.

Resolved Question:

I have recently had lab work done for life insurance and my GGT was elevated (182) and my ALT was slightly elevated (60). All other levels were normal. I have no present symptoms of liver disease (lethargy, diarrhea, jaundice, etc.). I am not a chronic drinker, a few times a month if that, but I have used anabolic steroids in the past, less than 2 years old patientago. Could this be a contributor to the elevation? I am a 27 y/o male 5'10" 230lbs with no relevant medical history. No current medications and no allergies.

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.
GGT is raised if you consume alcohol and sometimes due to certain medications. Anabolic steroids taken 2 years old patientago is not responsible for the raise of these enzymes.
Your ALT is slightly elevated. The most likely cause is fatty liver disease. You seem to be obese and obesity is a risk factor for fatty liver disease.
You can get an ultrasound scan of the abdomen done to see whether you have fatty liver disease.
If fatty liver is confirmed weight reduction is the first step in its treatment.
Also get checked for infections like hepatitis B and C which can raise ALT levels.
I hope that answers your question.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Regards,
Dr.R.K
