Blood in stool and external hemorrhoids

Resolved Question:

I have been having stomach problems specifically with my colon. I went to my general dr about it and I did have a ct scan with tint and they did catch my colon in spazam. They said it was most likely ibs and said that there was nothing to do about it. That I could see a specialist and get a colonoscopy. I have a friend that has the same condition and the colonoscopy does nothing to help her and she dosent bother with the meds as she says they do not help her. I have switched to a high fiber diet and it helped. But I am still get occational bright red blood in my stool. I will attach a photo if I can. My dr blamed it on a hemroid. Which I know I do have external hemroids but idk about internal ones. I do suffer from perodic constipation and hard stool. Do I need to be concerned about this condition? Is my health in danger? My drs seem distant and unconcerned. As I am only 33 years old.

Ok my symptoms are mild lower left stomach pain and gurgling, frequent constipation, bright red blood in stool occasionally, and I do have external hemroids. I have had my gallbladder removed. I have had issues with constipation with hard stool all my life. I don't take any medications. But I do get sinus or ear infections that require antibiotics several times a year. I don't have any other major illnesses that I know of. The only test I have had done is a CT scan with tint which caught my colon in spazam. Let me know if I can give you any other information to help with the diagnosis.

Hi,
Thanks for providing the additional information.

There is no need to worry about your health issues.
You need to develop good bowel habits.
High fiber diet helped you. So continue taking high fiber diet ( lot of vegetables and fruits). Drink plenty of fluids. Good physical activity is also essential. Till your bowel movements become normal, you can take fiber supplements like metamucil.

The bright red blood in stool can be due to either hemorrhoids or fissure. A good bowel movement will prevent this. So follow the advice which I have given above.
Check your blood glucose level and also get your thyroid function tested.
Avoid cough syrups as these will worsen constipation.

Hope this helps, please let me know if you have any queries.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.

I have had both my thyroid and glucose levels checked by my regular doctor this year and both came back normal. Admittedly my diet could use the improvements you mentioned. I have stopped eating dairy as I believe I'm lactose intolerant and I lost 15lbs from getting rid of dairy it really helped. I still suffer from bloating (not related to my period) mild stomach pain. I'm was relived to hear you say the blood in the stool is not serious. I am trying to get pregnant and I do not want to have to do a colonoscopy at this time because I would have to delay trying.

Hi,

Colonoscopy takes only a few minutes. You can return home the same day. So there is no need to postpone your pregnancy because of this.

I did not say blood in stool is not serious. I just told you not to worry as your issue is due to hemorrhoids/fissres and can be easily managed.

Try to develop good bowel habits with high fiber diet, fiber supplements and plenty of fluids.

Please feel free to discuss further.

Dr.R.K
