Hi,
Thank you for posting your query at DoctorSpring.com
Rectally taken phenobarbitone has a good rate of absorption and good bio-availability. Bioavailability is close to 90%. Time to maximum concentration is about four and a half hours.
Best wishes,

SORRY I GOT THE NAME WRONG ITS
pentobarbital! does it still have same apsotion rate?

OK thanks when I have read about medication via an enema it says that it can be very irrgegular..
Also that suprises me, so if i am taking it to sleep it will take that long to take effect? I know orally if i was too consume it it would just take a few minutes or so.
I thought rectal adminstration had a very quick onset, but seems downside is the time it takes to absorb.
if you can confirm that will be great thanks

Thank you for getting back.
The effect would begin in a few minutes. Four and a half hours would be required for the maximum effect to occur.

Patient replied :

hi my other questions were not answered thought..

i told you the wrong medication spelt it wrong so would this be both the same for pentobarbitial and phentobarbitial?

Also is the effect the same as oral I KNOW if you DRINK it The effect takes minutes and about 20 mins for full effects so need to know if rectal is the same.

if you can give me a comparassion between the two that would help

thanks

Thank you for getting back.
I have used Pentobarbital in cases of status epilepticus (where a person has continuous fits and is unconscious, admitted in ICU on ventilator). So, the discussion was on phenobarbital or phenobarbitone (both are same).
The effect of oral solution also would start in minutes and maximum effect would be seen at 1-3 hours after the intake. The bioavailability is about 90% (similar to rectal).
Regarding pentobarbitone, if taken rectally (for sedation), the effect would start in 20-60 minutes (same if taken orally).
