Abdominal distension on antibiotics

Resolved Question:

I was prescribed an antibiotic three days ago for a bladder infection and am half way through the course. My symptoms have gone (constant urge to urinate but without success, a little blood in the urine, pain at the end if urination) but is it normal that, at this stage, my tummy area would be very swollen, to the point where I look a few months pregnant? And should I expect that this would go away by the time I complete the course of antibiotics?

Hello,

Thank you for choosing DoctorSpring.

The swelling of abdomen is NOT normal. This does not seem to be directly related to the antibiotics or the bladder infection. A swelling in the abdomen in duration of few days time could be due to either fluid or air. If the swelling due to gas ( gaseous distension inside the intestine ) and if you have normal bowel movement then there is nothing to worry. But if the swelling is due to fluid, it is called ascites and it needs further testing.

I need to know whether you are passing urine normally or is there any reduction in the volume ? Is there any swelling of legs ? Is there puffiness of face ? Are passing stools normally ?

It is better to get medical help soon. Meanwhile let me know about them.

Do keep me posted. I will keep this consult open

Patient replied :

Urine volume and passing is normal. There is no puffiness of legs or face. Stool today (first time in a couple of days, which is quite normal for me) was actually quite piecey, like multiple small parts. It is light in colour. I have had a little gas the last day or so.

Hello and thankyou for your reply. The fact that you are passing urine and stools normally are good signs. No puffiness of legs and face is also a good sign.

The distension you are having right now could be due to gaseous formation due to the antibiotics.
I would advise you to take the OTC tablet Prilosec, once a day half an hour before a meal for the next 5 days. You can have a probiotic too for 3 days.
Continue with your antibiotic course for the urine infection.

However if you notice any alarming signs like decreased urine or no stools, abdomen distension that makes your abdomen feel tense, yellowish discolouration of your skin or very high coloured urine, go and get yourself examined right away.

Feel free to follow up with any further query.

Thankyou.
