Hello,
Strong unpleasant vaginal odor can be due to bacterial or fungal infections of vagina. You did not specify the type of birth control you are using. Oral contraceptive pills are nothing but hormonal combinations and can change the acidity (pH) of vaginal secretions which can lead to growth of various infectious bacteria like trichomonas and fungi like yeast. Simple precautions can alleviate this problem and prevent from infection.
- Maintain good vaginal hygiene by keeping area dry and clean.
- Avoid frequent douching
- Avoid any irritant chemicals or soaps. Use preferably mild soap and warm water for cleaning
- Avoid tight undergarments and prefer cotton, loose fitting clothes allowing sufficient air-flow
- Avoid tampons and keep changing sanitary pad frequently
- Use condoms and check for any STDs in your partner, if having unprotected sex
- Avoid smoking.
- Consult your Gynecologist if there is any sudden change in vaginal discharge like change in color, foul/fishy odor, itching or redness. Antibiotics like metronidazole and anti fungals like clotrimazole and miconazole are highly effective in treating bacterial and fungal infections respectively. Topical vaginal creams containing miconazole are also available.
- Do not use antibiotics unnecessarily as their excessive use can allow yeast infection to grow.
Hope this helps. Kindly follow up with any further questions.
