Hello, thanks for coming back with your query.
Kegel exercises are the pelvic floor muscle strengthening exercises, which consist of alternate contraction and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles.
Before starting the kegel exercise the bladder should be emptied, and then you must lie on your back. Tighten the pelvic floor muscles, and hold them in that position for 10-15 seconds then relax for the same period of time. Continue doing this for more number of times in a row per set. Progressively increase the time period and number of sets. By repeating this twice every day, you can see the result in 2-3 months or may be earlier.
Kegel exercise also involves usage of pelvic muscle toning devices. They are available in the market.
The pelvic floor comprises of the muscles of vagina, muscles of urethra and ano-rectal muscles. Normally these muscles keep the above mentioned structures in place and maintain their continence. Estrogen hormone is responsible for its healthy functioning. In elderly women (in post menopausal age), the estrogen hormone levels wane and hence there is disturbance in the normal functioning. On topical application of estrogen there is reversal of the tissue structure and helps in strengthening. Consult your gynaecologist and follow the instructions.
Good luck for your physician's visit.
Hope this helps
