VASOVAGAL RESPONSE to pain in knee on sitting down.

Resolved Question:

I had a vasovagal response today to a sharp pain I felt in my right knee while sitting down at my desk at work. I am trying to figure out what the problem might be; while I can walk okay without any pain, the left side of my right knee feels tender, especially when I bend it in a sitting position (and especially at the angle where I am sitting on the ground and engaging in abdominal exercises). I was wondering if anyone may have a better idea of what the problem might be.

For background, I work out substantially (5-6 times a week) and run relatively frequently (2-3 times a week, at least 5 miles each time) when it is warm enough outside. I have more recently been doing indoors strength training and some cardio exercises with a plyometric focus. I had no onset of any issues beyond standard workout fatigue before this happened today.

Hello,
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
I understand your concern.
The sharp pain that you felt today could be due to the intense workout schedule you have ( 5-6 times per week) as you mentioned. You also run 5 miles 2-3 times a week, and that also puts a lot of pressure on the knee joint.
As of now, I will only advise you to rest your knee and if the pain is severe, you can take Tab. Advil for relief. If the pain does not settle down over the next 2-3 days, an x-ray will be helpful in finding the diagnosis.
Feel free to discuss further,
Regards.

Patient replied :

Thanks for the response. However, I was more interested in knowing if it's possible to identify more specifically what part of my knee may be having a problem as opposed to a temporary pain remedy. As mentioned it is not painful right now, but it definitely feels tender when I bend the knee or if I am standing in place for a period of time
Additionally, would an X-Ray or an MRI be the more appropriate measure to take?

Hello,
The muscle related pains, which I feel is what you have got, is due to the ligaments in the knee.
To identify the exact ligament, MRI is advised.
Since the pain has reduced, it is likely that the tenderness will also reduce over a period of time.
You can get a MRI done, and upload the reports. I will guide you further,
Regards.
