Hello,

Thank you for asking your query at DoctorSpring.

In all probability you are getting the urinary tract infection again and again because of the stones. While Amoxicillin will take care of the Urinary Tract Infection (it is an antibiotic), it will not help in resolution of the stones. And as long as the stone is there you have a higher risk of getting infection again.

You should get investigated with ultrasound KUB (to look at your Kidneys, Urine Routine and Culture. In the mean time you can take on C. Tamsulosin 0.4 mg once in the night in consult with your Doctor. You can take unsweetened Cranberry juice also to help in preventing urinary tract infection.

A definitive treatment plan can only be formulated after these tests.
Hope this helps

ok am confused. i am having no stones for laste few weeks. the ones i did pass was small and passed easily. How do I get rid of the current infection? can i take amoxicilan again and can the dose be higher and longer to get rid of infection? As i said i have no pain urinating and am more worried about clearing infection up.. I have amoxicillan and want to know can i up the dose and length of time taking it.. Am concerened since i just did a round at a 1000 mg a day.. is it safe to do it again..

Hello,

You cannot know for sure, whether you have stones or not without an Ultrasound. There could be stones in the renal pelvis, urethra or bladder. This might not be apparent, but can cause recurrent UTI.

Amoxicillin dose is 500mg thrice a day (for normal adults). There are no saftery concerns. However it might not be effective in your case. An alternative antibotic like Norfloxacin 400mg twice daily for 5-7 days might be a better choice. However you should take it only in consult with your Doctor, after doing a Urine culture and sensitivity.(To know which organism is causing the infection and which antibiotic is better)

Hope this helps

Patient replied :

given my weight and age should I take it three or four times a day the amoxicillin that is??plus how many days should it be taken for 14 or 21 ? also since I am passing the small stones if had an ultrasound and found more what treatment would be done. Have heard since passable there is no treatment for stones correct me if im wrong.

Hello,

500mg thrice daily will be the minimum requirement for you. 7-10 day course under normal circumstances. But let me warn you again Amox might not be the best antibiotic choice. You will require urine culture test.

You will be passing the stones which are only small enough to pass through the urethral meatus. Rest of them (larges ones) could be still stuck. That is why you require a USG.

Hope this helps
Thank you
