Treatment for random bleeding with brown vaginal discharge.

Resolved Question:

Hello
I have been having brown vaginal discharge then bleeding for the last 2 weeks. I'm on continuous birth control to help with painful and heavy periods. I was tested negative for STDs and normal pap results. The spotting stopped for a few days but now the brown discharge is back. What should I do. I haven't stopped taking my birth control pills for over 6 months and so I shouldn't be having a period. I have no fever or any other signs of illness, only a little cramping as if I were having a period but no burning, itching or other discomforts. The next available appointment to see my doctor is the end of September. I do use Water works vaginal cleansing system twice a day and that has been a bit irritating lately as well. Is there anything I could do to stop this discharge and spotting is the Water works vaginal douching system causing the discharge and random bleeding? Any advice will be appreciated.

Hello
Thank you for posting your query at DoctorSpring.com
I understand your concern.
Firstly what is your age ?
Secondly, how long has this issue of painful and heavy period been going on ?
Have you been investigated for the same.
A workup should have included - internal exam, pelvic transvaginal ultrasound scan, hormones ( FSH, LH, TSH, Prolactin, OGTT, DHEAS, Free testosterone ), a Pap smear and an endometrial biopsy if required.
Has the cause of this problem been identified ?
It is possible that the continuous hormones that you are taking for the problem, are not adequate, and hence you are having spotting .
Actually without a formal workup it is not possible to comment on why the birth control is causing such spotting.
Also, do NOT use any vaginal cleansing systems, soaps, gels , douches etc.
They just deplete the normal vaginal flora, making it prone to irritation, breakage and infections.
Normal vaginal secretions are enough to cleanse the vagina if you maintain reasonable perineal hygiene.
All the best
Please feel free to discuss further.
Regards.
