Resolved question:
Male, 69. Type II diabetes. Metformin 500 mg 2x day. My brother' PSA went from 3 to 5 in a year. And the doc found a lump on his prostate. I know what that can mean, and it shook me up. I haven't had a psa in couple of years. I looked on the internet for symptoms of prostate cancer. I do have periodic "slow" getting started urination in the mornings, which the internet said is a symptom of an enlarged prostate. Then as I urinate, if feels like the prostate is"relaxing" and I urinate more freely. My doc said the prostate can enlarge while laying flat. I was told that my prostate was large. I have NO other symptoms. No "pink" urine. NO painful urinations. NO night time or frequent urinations. NONE. But since my brother told me his situation, I'm going to get blood drawn and a urinalysis tomorrow. My question is, since I have no symptoms other than the "slow go" at first, could my situation more likely just an enlarged prostate??? I'm rather nervous about this and concerned. I hope that IF there is anything wrong, it can be treated. Will you shed some light on this for me???

Hello,
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
We treat the symptoms of prostate and not the size of prostate and you certainly seem to be having some symptoms and should be on medications for the same.
You certainly need to be investigated with PSA. Carcinoma prostate can happen even without any symptoms and hence the importance of digital rectal examination (DRE) by urologist and PSA.
In all probability you are having enlarged prostate and just need medications but still to be on safer side I strongly recommend PSA as well as DRE.
Feel free to discuss further,
Sincerely
