Switch from Minigynon to Pearl LD and leg cramps

Resolved Question:

I was on the minigynon contraceptive and after my period came i switched to Pearl LD. I only took the Pearl for about 8 days and then stopped. My period came on day 6 after I stopped taking the Pearl. But every since my period started I have been having cramps in my legs. Could the pill have caused this? I am 27 years old. i stopped the minigynon because i believe the cramps with my period was too much.

Hello,

Thanks for your query at DoctorSpring.com.

Leg cramps are often a side effect of oral contraceptive pills. If you have been taking the birth control pills for years, you should report this to your doctor, as one of the serious side effects of pills ( very uncommon though ) is thrombosis in the veins of the legs. This is more likely if you smoke heavily, are overweight, diabetic or have other medical conditions.

Normally, oral contraceptive pills are PRESCRIBED to correct the cramping and pain associated with periods, because they make periods more regular and less painful.

It is surprising that Minigynon was causing more painful periods in your case. When your period stops, if the leg cramps still persist, you should see your doctor for the reason I mentioned.

Otherwise, taking a mild antispasmodic should get you through the periods.
If the cramps are unbearable each month on the pill, you should stop taking them.

However, often, vitamin E deficiency and deficiency of the B complex group of vitamins also causes pain and cramps in the legs. You can consult your doctor and start taking Vitamin E capsules.

Have yourself tested for calcium, B complex, and vitamin D deficiency too. Also, taking less of fluids and water throughout the day would aggravate the leg cramps. Make sure you stay properly hydrated ( even if you feel bloated during your periods ) and take enough potassium rich foods like coconut water, bananas etc.

All the best.
Please feel free to ask any further follow up questions.
