Survival rate and symptoms of cervical cancer.

Resolved Question:

Does everyone have symptoms eventually with cervical cancer? I have been a bit concerned as I have had some pain in my abdomen on and off for a while now, it feels like a shooting pain and then it goes away. That is the only symptom I really have. been that way so this is not anything new that just started happening. I do go to the bathroom a lot, but I have always & It has been a while since i had a pap test, and now I am really worried it could be cervical cancer. I just would like some peace of mind until I get to the doctor. What are the survival rates of cervical cancer?

Hi,

It is very unlikely to be cervical cancer as cervical cancer rarely, if ever presents with pain. The 5 year survival rate of cervical cancer is about 98 % for stage 1 of cervical cancer but reduces to 15 % in stage 4 of cervical cancer.5 year survival rate gives the percentage of people who will believe after 5 years of diagnosis.

Cervical cancer usually present with post coital bleeding with foul discharge from vagina. The pain you are experiencing might be spasm of the abdomen that can occur due to number of reasons like abdominal infection, dehydration and hunger.

I would recommend the following things.

1) Get yearly PAP smears done for early diagnosis of any cervical changes that may lead to cervical cancer .PAP smear is the best screening test available to diagnose cervical cancer. If it shows any cervical cell changes, you might need confirmatory test like biopsy or LEEP.

2) Always use protection while having sexual intercourse and follow safe sexual intercourse. Cervical cancer has shown strong association with Human papilloma virus, which is sexually transmitted.

3) Get vaccinated with cervarix or gerdasil if not vaccinated. Cervical cancer is the only cancer that can be prevented by vaccination.

4) Follow a strict regimen of exercise .Also eat a balanced and healthy diet. This can help in maintaining a good cervical environment and prevent the chances of cervical cancer.

Thank you.
