1. If you have a history of crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis this could cause you to pass blood through anus. If not, talk to your physician or gastroenterologist about the possibility of these underlying illnesses.

2. You will need to get a thorough physical examination, including a per rectal examination along with blood tests and urine tests.

3. A few possible findings which the doctor can feel upon digital examination, could include hemorrhoids or any other growth including cancer.

4. If these tests are inconclusive you may require a colonoscopy in which a scope is inserted per anum and used to visualize the colon for bleeding sites.

If you start to experience heavy bleeding, dizziness, fainting or if symptoms persist for more than 1 day, seek emergency medical attention as you made need to replace fluids including blood transfusions.
