Rash on the head penis.

Resolved question:

I have a circular rash (a ring) about 3/4" in diameter stretching from the head of my penis and continuing down the shaft. I have left this untreated for about 6 months now and it has not increased or decreased in size. There is some very slight itching and irritation though the sensation is intermittent. I am sexually active with my monogamous partner and we only ever engage in sex orally.

Hi,

A rash around the head of the penis can mean several different things. The most common skin finding there is a benign condition known as Pearly Penile Papules. These are tiny bumps that can either be white, pink, or sometimes red that are not painful or itchy. They normally are found at the back end of the penile head and surround the whole circumference. They are a normal finding in as many as 10-20% of men and are not an STD. The most common type of STD that presents as small bumps is HPV (i.e. genital warts).

I would recommend the following things-

1) Consult a physician and discuss the possibility of it being a human papilloma rash. There are serological and hpv typing test which can help determine the same. If it is HPV, there are a few OPD procedures like cry therapy and podophyllin treatment that can help in its removal

2) Always use protection while having sexual intercourse and follow safe sexual intercourse. Cervical cancer has shown strong association with Human papilloma virus, which is sexually transmitted.

3) Take tab. Tylenol or tab. ibuprofen to reduce the inflammation and to reduce the redness.

4) Follow a strict regimen of exercise .Also eat a balanced and healthy diet. This can help in maintaining a good penile environment and prevent the chances of penile cancer.

Thank you.
