Query about possibilities of HIV transmission after protected sex.

Resolved question:
Hello, I have a question regarding HIV. On March 2, 2014, I engaged in "protected" sex with someone I recently met. Approximately 10 days later, I had a moderate night sweat. The following morning my throat was sore (I also sleep directly under 2 fans). When I Googled the symptoms, HIV kept appearing. I immediately began worrying. I had a STD blood/urine Test performed at the local clinic for all std's including HIV antibody test. The test results were negative. Since taking the test, I have been extremely worried and have been sweating for the last 3 nights. I also have developed other symptoms such as; runny nose, mucus congestion, seldom coughing and once nausea. I haven't had any other symptoms. Should I be worried about HIV?

Hello,

Thank you for choosing DoctorSpring.
I have gone through your case and understand your concern.

You had a protected sex and so you are NOT at risk for HIV infection. HIV transmission via protected sex is negligibly rare. The symptoms are NOT specific or suggestive of HIV infection. The symptoms you are experiencing will be just a simple viral infection.

The HIV test is good way to be sure. You need to do the Combo HIV test at least after 3-4 weeks of sexual encounter. If you have done the antibody test it is better to do it after 5-6 weeks. If you have done it early you can repeat it, just to be sure.

For the symptoms that you are having I would suggest that you take symptomatic care.
You can do steam inhalation by inhaling through your nose and releasing through your mouth. Do this twice a day.
You can also do take the OTC tablet Allegra at night
Since the nausea was just once you need not worry.

I hope this has helped. Please reply as a follow up.
Thankyou

Thank you for your response Dr. Sebastian. With regards to the constant night sweats, is it also a symptom of viral infections as well? If so, will it subside?

Hello,

What I meant to say is that these symptoms including night sweats can be a sign of a passing infection like a viral infection/flu, not likely to be of HIV. Yes night sweats can occur in viral infections, especially if you are feverish. You can observe for couple of days whether the symptoms will resolve naturally. If not you can get in touch with your GP for few baseline tests.

I will keep this consult open so that you can get back to me anytime.

Hope this helps
Thank you

Thank you Dr. Sebastian for your excellent advice. I met with my GP and it was in fact a viral infection. Again, I appreciate your help.
