Hello,

Thank you for asking your query at DoctorSpring.

Technically yes, some STD can affect throat (and very rarely eyes). However to ascertain that I would like some additional information.

1. What kind of STD test was done ? (urine ? blood)
2. Was there any history of oral exposure (like in oral sex)
3. As of now kind of symptoms do you have now ?

You can reply as a followup
Thank you

Thank you!!

1. There were both cultures and blood work taken.
2. We did have oral sex as well as vaginal.
3. My throat is sore, hurst when I swallow. My eyes are a little red.

I appreciate your quick reply!

Hello,

In that case, it is very unlikely that the eye and throat symptoms are due to an STD. Culture and blood work should rule out the infections. And I assume you have no major vaginal / urinary symptoms. Putting this together we can say the eye/throat symptoms are NOT due to a STD. This is probably a viral infection. You can do mild warm saline gargle twice a day. Use some soothing lozenges. The symptoms should resolve by a couple of days.

Hope this helps

Patient replied :

I was tested 11 days after my encounter, is that too soon?

It depends. For the infections we are considering (Gonorrhoea, HSV etc) it is not very soon. However for infections like HIV it is bit soon. You can get an HIV test done (the risk is low, still) after 5-6 weeks. Other tests need to be repeated only if there are prominent symptoms. In further always use condoms !
Hope this helps
Thank you
