Itchy anus with rash

The results of your anal swab report shows that you have had an itchy perianal rash caused by Beta hemolytic streptococci group 'g' that is susceptible to a beta lactam antibitoic.

Your Doctor might choose to start an antibiotic. But the decision will be also based on the clinical picture as Streptococci can be found in normal skin / as a contaminant.

In order to cure your infection your doctor will start you off on probably oral peniciilin for 2 weeks or amoxiciilin - clavulanate or an equivalent beta lactam antibiotic that the causative bacteria is susceptible too. I strongly recommend you to complete the course of antibiotics prescribed and you may have to take another course in case there is any recurrence.

The infection hopefully will resolve with the antibiotics. This class of antibiotics are generally safe.

Thankyou so much - so just to clarify ... This does mean that the probable cause of the rash etc IS streptococci!? I was just confused by the 'scanty' part of the results.

As you can expect rectum/anal canal can normally have bacteria inside in it. So it is very difficult to say for sure. However I think this rash may be unrelated to the streptococci bacteria .

Hmm, now I am confused. So your opinion is that the perinanal itching and each is not likely to be strep?

In your last post did you mean to write "however I think this rash may be related to the strep bacteria " instead of "unrelated" ?

Sorry for the confusion.
Allow me to clarify.

1.Your primary question was - "Will your Doctor be prescribing antibiotics" - Answer is yes he may be.

2. Could this rash be due to the Streptococci bacteria ? - Not possible to say for sure. Reason - the rectum and anal canal had lot bacteria even in normal individuals. So these scanty bacteria may be an accidental finding. But also same time if the lesion is typical of a Streptococci infection it is prudent to assume the bacteria caused.

So basically it will come down to your Doctor's opinion as he has directly seen the lesion and physically examined you.

Personally I would say " this lesion may be unrelated, not caused by the Streptococci." but then I have not seen the lesion. So I would say trust your Doctors judgement. This is tricky situation.
