Is LEICHTENSTEIN METHOD of hernia repair high risk for INCARCERATED HERIA?

I am about to have the Leichtenstein method of hernia repair for an incarcerated large hernia. I am 6'2" 289 lbs. age 68 and in good physical condition. A CT Scan revealed that my colon is in the hernia. I am told that I need general and that this operation will take two hours. I have read that there is inordinate pain associated with this procedure. Can you tell me how people fare after having this done and whether this is the right procedure. Also is this a higher risk operation given the incarcerate hernia?

Hernia anywhere in the body has to be operated. 



As you are 68 yrs, Liechtenstein hernioplasty is the best treatment. Here, a non absorbable mesh is placed to strengthen the abdominal wall and to prevent recurrence. There may be some inconvenience for few days which is the case with most surgeries.



It is not an high risk operation. 



It is not very painful as you have been told.  And any post-operative pain will be adequately and well managed. So please do not worry about it.

Thanks - I have severe sleep apnea and use c-Pap machine. Is this a concern with regard to general anesthesia?

Your Anaesthesiologist will decide on GA only if it is best for you keeping in view your complete health status. If the hospital is well equipped, you can proceed with General anaesthesia.



I prefer Epidural/Spinal anesthesia to my patients with similar problems.
