High LYMPHOCYTE COUNT with LOW NEUTROPHILS. LYMPHOMA?

Resolved Question:

Hi,

Can you help with interpreting a blood test? We live abroad where access to our normal doctor is limited and we struggle with the local language, so we would like to know whether the result is anything that we should worry about and require immediate action.

A quick Google revealed that a high lymphocyte count with a low neutrophil count might be caused by lymphoma, which clearly would be bad news...

Thanks,
Mark

Hello,
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
I understand your concern and I am here to help you.
Before i Interpret anything, can you please give me a brief medical history? What are the symptoms? What led you to take the tests? Was it picked up during routine check ups?
Are there any other investigations that have been done?
Any history of lymphoma in the family?
High lymphocytes count can also be found in acute infections, hence i need to know the symptoms in detail.
Awaiting your reply,
Regards.

Hi,
Our son had very high fever spikes (40.5C) and fleeting stomach pains. Doctor assumed a urinary tract infection as he is also peeing frequently and touching his penis, so ordered the tests just in case. He also prescribed antibiotic for the UTI (Cefixime), which we started after the tests were done. No other tests have been done. We just got the blood and urine results back and wanted to understand them better. They are also sent to doctor automaticaly by the lab, but he's now on holidays so we wanted to get help interpreting sooner, hence Google'ing and contacting you. My wife's father died of leukaemia. My mother died of cancer - it was in the liver but they never found out where it started as it was so advanced when they found it and she passed away very quickly. My father had prostate cancer.
Does this help?
Should we go see another doctor, just in case or are we over-reacting?
Thanks and regards.

Hello,
From the clinical history, I suspect an infection only. I hope it will settle down after a course of antibiotics. All cancers are not hereditary. You may continue them for the time being and revisit the same doctor so that he will be a better person to assess the outcome and improvement.
The blood test report attached in the previous email is not indicative of cancer.
Feel free to discuss further,
Kind regards
