Hello,
Thank you for posting your medical query to DoctorSpring.com
Your 6 year old son is taking piriton (chlorpheniramine) which is an anti-histamine drug. Is this for the hay fever during the summer that you mentioned?
Common side effects which are associated with usage of chlorpheniramine are: drowsiness, dizziness, impaired coordination, headache, epigastric discomfort, thickened bronchial secretions.
To answer your query I would like a few more details:
1) For what indication is he on chlorpheniramine? What is the dosage? Does he take it on an as needed basis or daily?
2)Is he on any additional medication?
I look forward to your reply and clarifying any further queries you have, hope this helps
Patient replied :
Kai is not on any other medication my mother keeps giving it him to stop nose bleeds he has 2 5ml spoonfuls a night but he is complaining a lot about headache, belly ache, feeling sick & when he goes to the loo its very runny not solid
Dear Parent,
There are a couple of things that are not clear in your description of Kai's problems. Nose bleeds can be due to multiple reasons. Has he been evaluated for the same? If yes, what reasons were given by the doctors for his recurrent nose bleeds?
Secondly, why would any child be given PIRITON to stop nose bleeds? Piriton is an ANTI-HISTAMINIC drug (Chlorapheniramine maleate) used in allergic rhinitis or upper respiratory infections to decrease nasal secretions or nasal congestion. Was it prescribed by a pediatrician? If yes, I fail to understand the rationale behind such prescription. And the dose that you mentioned is not clear.. Is it 2.5 ml or 2.5 spoonfuls?? Is it given once daily, at night time alone?
His problems of headache, belly ache and feeling sick seem to be unrelated to piriton, if he is getting only 2.5 ml once daily. Long term side effects of piriton include dental caries, etc. However, I would strongly advise you to stop the irrational use of PIRITON in Kai.
