Fluctuating BP and bloating

Resolved Question:

Hi Doc,

I am 29 years old Female. In the month of April, I visited a doctor complaining neck and shoulder pain and was diagnosed hypertension. My BP was 220/150. I was hospitalized for two days and was given NTG to lower down my BP. Doctors tested my kidneys and heart. My Kidneys have been working fine and my heart has shown a minute enlargement. Rest of my reports were normal. Since then, I have been taking Hypertension medicines twice a day. I take Olmesar M50 at night post dinner and Olmesar A 10mg in morning after breakfast. I have been eating all my food cooked with olive oil. I go for a brisk walk 20 minutes daily and have stopped alcohol and fried junk food. I eat out once a month. My BP keeps fluctuating between 145/100 - 125/85. However, I have been bloating up for past 3 months like a balloon. I have gained almost 5 kgs. I weighed 65 kgs in August and now weigh around 70kgs. I have spoken to my doctor and he advises that I need to eat healthy and increase my workout. My worry is that I am bloating all over the body and this seems a little intermettent. a few days my tummy looks all flat and other days I cant breathe in properly. I also take Pantacid for acidity twice a day but it doesnt help. Please help me.

Hello,
Thank you for your query at doctorspring.com.

Merely cooking food in olive oil isn't going to help with weight loss. You have to cut down on your calories. Replace rrice n breads by sprouts fruits and green leafy vegetables. Even excessive olive oil can cause weight gain. Exercise atleast 30 min daily. If weight loss is not occurring it means you need to do more exercise.

Aerocort inhalers have steroids and can sometimes cause weight gain. Hypothyroidism and cushing syndrome are other things that can cause such weight gain and constipation. Restrict your salt intake. you can be started on chlorthalidone for BP and possible fluid retention. Some females suffer such periodic bloating and weight gain around menses as pre-menstrual syndrome.

Hope this helps, please feel free to discuss further.

Thanks Doc..

My diet is as follows
Breakfast
Safolla Oats with milk or oats upma with a cup of tea or bread jam with tea
Lunch
Any homemade vegetable with two chapatis
Snack
Tea with biscuit/rusks or namkeen
Dinner at 10
Two or three chapatis with home made dal and vegetable.

As prescribed by my doc, I do not take parathas, fried food, coffee, mutton, chocolates and sweets at all.

I eat rice only once a week during lunch. I agree that losing weight takes time. However my worry is rapid weight gain and my face is swollen up.. At the start of tje day I wear my trousers very easily but by the end of the day I can hardly breath in my clothes. I have only bloated on the upper body like breast, stomach and face and with each passing day it is getting worse. I am having more breathing difficulties than before and sometimes my stomach is so heavy that I cannot walk. I cant stand for long duration or I become breathless.Everyday I take antacids like eno or pudin hara tablets after dinner.

Is this normal or do I need to change any of my medicine like my inhaler or my hypertension medicine or do I need to get any tests done? Please help.

Please consider starting chlorthalidone in consult with your Doctor. It
will control your BP as well as if the bloating is due to fluid retention it will take care of that. Please get the opinion of an endocrinologist to rule out cushing syndrome or hypothyroidism. Try replacing Aerocort for respiratory problems with something lioe salbutamol and ipratropium. They are different class of drugs and different actions but
