Resolved question:
Hello,
I have had diarrhea for exactly a week now and it does not seem to be improving. For the first 3 days, I had migrane, fever and could not eat anything. On Thursday I saw a walk-in clinic, which advised me to try probiotics (Florastor) which I have been taking twice a day as instructed. I felt much better Friday and was able to return to work, and over the weekend felt like I had a lot more energy as well, but still have diarrhea which does not seem to be improving.
I have been eating the BRAT diet as instructed, usually 2-3 pieces of toast per day, 2 cups of apple sauce, 1 banana, and water but it seems to come in waves where I will feel ok like I don't have the urge to go, and then suddenly I get the stomach cramps and will have to poop 2-3 times within 20 minutes.
We were unsure what originally caused the diarrhea as I ate everything with my family, and no one else had any issues, and I did not take any medications or anything, and I did not eat anything outside of my usual diet.
Is there any solution to help cure the diarrhea as I've never had it last more than 2 days before and have lost about 6 pounds so far, I have my hockey season starting this week and would like to be able to eat properly to put on some weight to be able to play.
Please let me know!

Hello,
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
I understand your concern.
It seems like you picked up a gastroenteritis and that has not been treated properly. Probiotics does help, but the first focus should be to control the infection. Yes your family memebers also ate the same thing, but sometimes these infections happen out of the blue, there are so many germs around and the gut immunity is different for different people.
I will advise you to continue the BRAT diet and once you take the medicines i am prescribing now, the diarrhea should stop in 2-3 days. Then you can go back to your normal diet so that you feel fit for your hockey season.
1) Tab. Loperamide SOS to control the frequency of diarrhea, can be taken once every 6 hours if required.
2) Tab. Ciplox 500 mg twice daily for 5-7 days, till the diarrhea subsides.
3) Tab. Lactobacillus ( Probiotics ) twice a day.
4) Drink plenty of water. 3-4 liters recommended.
Kindly take the above mentioned medicines, and you will recover in 2-3 days.
Regards.
Thank you for your response - my girlfriend works for London Drugs pharmacy and says these are all prescription drugs. How would i go about getting them if an email wont work as a "doctors note".
Hello,
Thanks for your reply.
Yes unfortunately i don't have the provision of providing a prescription online. Kindly consult your local physician to write a precription for the same. You do need antibiotics and unfortunately that needs your local physician's prescription. Loperamide will be available as OTC. Only for Ciplox, you need prescription.
Regards.
