Dosage of AMOXICILLIN for bad ear infection.

Resolved Question:

We're in Mexico for the summer. My 12 year old grandson has a bad ear infection. We went to a walk in clinic yesterday and got Rx for Clamoxin (Amoxicilan), Paracetamol Ibuprofeno, and Viazyl (neomycin) ear drops. The dosage is twice a day for the antibiotic, three times a day for the ibuprofen and ear drops.

The ibuprofen dosage is 325 mg.

The ibuprofen doesn't last long enough, sometimes only for 3 or 4 hours. Can I add a 4th dose a day? He is having a lot of ear and jaw pain. The doctor said his other ear isn't affected and nose, mouth and eyes are fine.

He also suffers from occasional gastritis.

I can understand your concerns. Ear infections can be really painful. It may not even let the child sleep peacefully.
However, there are limitations to the pain relief that we can provide. You could use it four times a day. But, remember not to exceed the maximum daily dose which is around 30 mg per kilogrammes body weight. So take care that the total daily dose does not exceed this upper limit. Moreover, ibuprofen can worsen gastritis. So ensure that it is taken an hour after feed with plenty of water.
The pain is likely to improve as the ear infection responds to antibiotic therapy. So usually, by two-three days there is a symptomatic improvement.
