Hello,
Diarrhea is most commonly cause by bacterial, viral or parasitic infections. Diarrhea in children is usually caused by rotavirus. Infectious diarrhea is often self limiting and any person with diarrhea for more than two days should be taken to a doctor for evaluation and investigation of cause. Diarrhea is associated with dehydration due to fluid and mineral loss from body. Children are especially sensitive to dehydration and can deteriorate quickly. So, giving oral rehydration solution (ORS) supplementation is important to maintain fluid balance. Parasitic infections like Entamoeba hystolytica (Amoebiasis) and Hook worm infestations can cause diarrhea, fatigue and loss of appetite in children for prolonged periods if untreated. Blood in stools can be a common finding in these parasitic infections. Amoebiasis can affect other organs like liver, so treatment with antibiotics like metronidazole is important. Anemia can occur in hook worm infestation which may require iron supplementation. Albendazole or mebendazole is effective in treating hook worm.
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease where immune reaction against wheat proteins gluten and gliadin causes inflammation of intestines resulting in diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue. A gluten free diet for entire life is the only available treatment option. Other causes to be ruled out include inflammatory bowel diseases Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis. They are not common in children below 15, but can occur at any age.
As your cousin is having diarrhea since 6 days now, It would be in his best interest to visit a physician for further evaluation and management.
Thank you. Hope this helps.
